For the Birds | Jersey City | Window Strike Data Collection - Volunteer Sign-up!

This September and October during peak migration, For the Birds will be continuing to collect data on Jersey City window strikes on the waterfront and Journal Square. Volunteers will monitor two known collision hot spots (the first around Journal Square, the second around the waterfront) to identify which buildings would most benefit from using window films and other deterrents.

How you can help: We need volunteers who will help us monitor collision sites over a two-week period, from Oct 6-19 and/or transport injured birds to rehab facilities.

  • Volunteers will work in pairs, walking around the designated sites in the early morning (sometime between 6 am and 8 am) and documenting any injured or dead birds they find. We will provide all instruction and equipment needed, including maps, survey sheets, gloves, and bags to transport injured birds. We will also arrange to collect any injured birds and bring them to wildlife rehab centers.
  • You may volunteer as many or as few days as you wish. Slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You can also volunteer as a ‘floater’ who is available to fill in if other volunteers become unavailable at the last minute. We will offer a modest stipend to volunteers for their time. We will reach out soon with the actual schedule for you to select times - this form is just to express interest!
  • Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Some familiarity with common birds is preferable but you do not need to be an expert—we will ID species from photographs.
  • Transport volunteers must be available around 9am when the rehab sites open. There are two places, both 30-40min drive from JC: The Raptor Trust at 1390 White Bridge Rd, Millington, NJ 07946 and Wild Bird Fund in Manhattan at 565 Columbus Ave, New York, NY 10024. We prefer driving as it causes less stress for the birds than public transport.
