About this report
This report is the result of the cooperation between BOI Research and HARA. The report provides in-depth production data per region in Indonesia from 2014-2018, with predictions until 2020. This report is beneficial, not only for those directly involved in the agriculture sector but more generally for the public at large as a starting point to understand the rice sector in Indonesia. Below is an overview of the contents of the report:
Indonesia experiences steady economic growth averaging 5,1%. Challenges remain especially low human resource quality, falling commodity prices, and the US-China trade war.
Consumption and production
Indonesia consumed 29 million tonnes of unhusked rice in 2018. Production stood 56.5 million tonnes of husked rice (32.4 million tonnes of unhusked rice) of the same year. BOI projects that rice production will reach 60.8 million tonnes of husked rice by 2020.
Rice productions are still heavily dependent on the rainy season. The government has been building dams and embungs (small dams) to enable multiple harvests per year.
The government’s Minimum Buying Price (HPP) and Maximum Selling Price (HET) are still not effective to control rice prices. Despite adequate production, Indonesia still imported around 2 million tonnes of rice in 2018 Indonesia’s rice export is very small and mostly done as part of aids to other countries.
