The INVASIVE Alliance is premised on Integrating Native Vegetation And Stopping Invasive VExations. We collaborate with public and private landowners to host club dig events for CBS to harvest wild bonsai or "yamadori" sustainably. During the dig event, participants are instructed on invasive plant ID and encouraged to try their hand at using removing invasive plants for bonsai use to remove them from our native environments. Meanwhile, if participants wish to dig native trees, they are asked to chop down or uproot 5 similarly sized invasive specimen for each native tree removed. Also, we will remove trash we find and practice leave no trace to leave the lands we bonsai hunt on better than we found them. The hope is that over time these practices will allow native plants to better regenerate in sites we host digs on.

Landowners near Columbus, OH with significantly wooded properties or unwanted shrubs who are interested in offering your land to CBS members for short-term or long-term access to dig small trees (invasive, landscaping, and native) in exchange to help clearing some invasive plants can also email invivobonsai@gmail.com to learn more.

Those who attend can expect some brief instruction on how to identify invasive shrubs in Ohio, how to identify good candidate wild bonsai to dig, how to dig wild bonsai safely, aftercare for any dug plants, and tips for long-term transformation of wild specimen into bonsai trees.
