walkSTEM@Northpark Center
Are you interested in participating in an innovative new STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics) Education program?

If yes, we'd like you to join the walkSTEM initiative, launching 2017! This initiative is planned and coordinated by talkSTEM (www.talkSTEM.org) a nonprofit organization that promotes STE(A)M education.  We are looking for energetic, open-minded, and creative people with an interest in promoting STEAM amongst youth in engaging ways.

walkSTEM@Northpark Center is a collaboration with Northpark's art program and is the second walkSTEM experience we will launch this spring.  The first walkSTEM experience will be at Dallas Arts District and is launching on March 14.

Details about the Northpark experience:
- similar to walkSTEM at Dallas Arts District, the goal is to train a group of educators/STEAM professionals to be walkSTEM docents and to lead groups on a "math walk" designed by Dr Whitney, Founder and President of the National Museum of mathematics in NYC
- Northpark already has fabulous, free outreach programs with a focus on sharing the spectacular art collection it houses:

a.   ArtRocks (a program open to the general public, and with a focus on elementary age children and their families).  walkSTEM will be an added experience at ArtRocks that will allow interested families to explore the amazing art collection and architecture in Northpark but now from a mathematical perspective.
Art Rocks 2017 Dates (all Saturdays, 1-4pm):  April 8, May 13, June 10, Aug 12, Oct 14
- We will have 2 walkSTEM experiences repeated on each Art Rocks event.
- You do NOT need to be available for all or even most of these dates.  We will have a pool of docents who will share these dates.

b.  Northpark provides free art programming to Uplift and other schools as field trip experiences.  The walkSTEM experience will be added to the existing art curriculum so that students can view art through the lens of math, or view math as an art form.

Docent Profile:
We are looking for dynamic, curious, creative, open-minded educators and STEAM professionals (retired or currently working)
- If you are already a walkSTEM docent (for the Dallas Arts District program), this program will probably be very interesting to you.
- If you are a retired teacher, professor, engineer, or other STEAM professional, we'd love to include you especially because docents with some flexibility in their schedules will be able to lead math walks at Northpark during school field trips (weekday mornings).
- For ArtRocks (Saturdays on the 5 dates listed above): each docent will sign up for 1 or 2 Art Rocks dates. Stipends will be provided.
- For field trips, the Manager of Arts Programming at Northpark will reach out to the pool of docents as dates are scheduled.  Stipends will be provided.

For walkSTEM@Northpark, we are looking to train a group of walkSTEM docents who will augment the fabulous art in Northpark and its existing art programming for elementary, middle, and high school students by offering "math walks" to these students during their field trips.  Training entails going on a customized math walk at Northpark Center for 45min-1hr with Dr Glen Whitney, Founder and President of the National Museum of Mathematics in New York City, the only math museum in the country.  The idea is to have a pool of walkSTEM docents who will lead groups of families and students on the same math talks around the mall that Dr Whitney leads them on during the training on Feb 23.  In this way, students and families will to only benefit from the terrific art experiences in NorthPark but also the math that's embedded in the art!!
walkSTEM@Northpark Center is a collaboration between Northpark Center, talkSTEM, and the National Museum of Mathematics.
