Earlier this year, the state legislature passed Good Cause Eviction Protections to protect millions of tenants against rent hikes and unfair evictions. The fight for Good Cause was a years-long campaign, and in the end, real estate interests got their way, and the watered-down version only applied to New York City. This was not the version of the bill advocates and leaders across the housing movement wanted and now requires cities upstate to opt-in. However, this is a moment for cities across New York to step up and say yes to Good Cause and to protect tenants in their communities from unlawful evictions!
The Local Progress New York Organizing Committee voted to launch our “Road To Good Cause Campaign” during our July 11th meeting. Together with our partners at Housing Justice 4 All, we’re committed to bringing Good Cause to every town, city, and village across our state.
