Members Meeting: ORGANISING IN THE CULTURAL SECTOR
Wednesday 4th August
7 - 8:30pm (with induction for new/prospective members from 6:30pm)
Zoom

Work in the cultural sector is fragmented, precarious, and poorly regulated. While certain cultural work is well unionised, huge sections of the workforce remain unrepresented and prevented from organising by employment practices that keep workers atomised and on short-term freelance contracts, promoting individualisation, competitiveness, and fear of blacklisting. Existing collective agreements cannot keep up with the constant creation of new job types and contracts, which offer little security and deny workers their basic rights. Cultural workers are overworked, burnt out and underpaid, making organising all the more challenging, yet all the more essential if we are to demand a just recovery of the sector.

In this monthโ€™s Members Meeting, UVW-DCW will ask:
What are the particular challenges to labour organising, that are faced by cultural workers?
Can we adapt traditional organising strategies and learn from past struggles?
What new tools or principles might be necessary to take on the cultural industry and win?

Members will critically reflect on the tried and tested strategies developed by union organiser Jane McAlevey, as well as considering tools such as Workers Inquiry, in the context of cultural work.

You will workshop ideas with workers from across the cultural sector, as well as having the opportunity for some focused discussion on the particular challenges and opportunities in:

๐ŸŽจ Visual arts and galleries
๐Ÿ’ป Graphic design
๐ŸŽญ Theatre and performance
๐ŸŽถ Music and nightlife
โœ‚๏ธ Fashion
๐Ÿซ Creative education and participatory arts

The meeting is open to all current and prospective members of UVW Designers + Cultural Workers with any level of experience in organising workers โ€“ including none at all! If you work in the cultural sector, come along and find out how you can strengthen worker power and solidarity for a more equitable culture for all.

The main meeting will run 7-8:30pm, and there is an induction at 6:30pm for new and prospective members to find out more about UVW Designers + Cultural Workers.
