American Red Cross Basic Life Support
The American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) course is designed to train healthcare professionals,
public safety personnel and other professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac
emergencies in adults, children and infants. Content in this program is consistent with:
• The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) 2015–2018 International
Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science with
• The 2015–2018 American Heart Association Guidelines Update for Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.
Through the use of lecture, skills demonstration and practice, case-based emergency response scenarios, and reflection and debriefing activities with a focus on team-based response, BLS builds the key critical thinking, problem solving, and team dynamic skills that are needed to drive better patient outcomes. Upon successful completion of the course, learners will receive a 2-year 'Basic Life Support' digital certificate with anytime, anywhere access to certificate and training history.
