IRVINE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT 4-6 MUSIC CHOICES

Dear IUSD parent:

The Irvine Unified School District is recognized as a national leader in arts education. As a result of generous contributions from the Irvine Company and the Irvine Public Schools Foundation, all students in grades four through six will receive two forty minute music lessons per week, taught by highly qualified credentialed music educators.

Fourth-graders may choose to participate in either Beginning Strings or Vocal Music. Each class is a yearlong commitment, requiring homework, practice time and participation in at least one evening concert to ensure students learn valuable performance skills along with music theory and music literacy.

Fifth-graders may choose to participate in Intermediate Strings (minimum one school year of experience), Beginning Winds or Vocal Music. Again, each class is a year long commitment, requiring homework, practice time and participation in at least one evening concert to ensure students learn valuable performance skills along with music theory and music literacy.

Sixth-graders may choose to participate in Advanced Strings (minimum two school years of experience), Advanced Winds (minimum one school year of experience) or Vocal Music. As with grades 4 and 5, each class is a year long commitment, requiring homework, practice time and participation in at least one evening concert to ensure students learn valuable advanced performance skills along with music theory and music literacy.

If your child is interested in instrumental music, please indicate the instrument he or she plays. If needed, our music teachers will be available to assist your child in making a decision.

An instrument and materials can be provided for students, however, traditionally over ninety-five percent of families have provided their child with a musical instrument either by the use of a family-owned instrument or renting from an agency such as the Irvine Public Schools Foundation Instrumental Rental Program. If you would like an instrument to be provided for your child, please contact your child’s music teacher (see bottom of form for contact information).

Please complete the following Music Class Selection Form by Wednesday September 18, 2013. Your child will be advised in obtaining appropriate materials based on their class choice. Students will also receive a class syllabus and information regarding instrument selection in their music class.

We thank you for your continuing support of music education in the Irvine Unified School District.

Sincerely
Brad Van Patten
Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts
