Get Involved – Shifting the Narrative on the Economy

About Heard and the project

Heard is a charity that works to change the way the media talks about people and the issues that shape our lives. We believe the stories we hear in the news, on TV, and in everyday life play a big role in how people understand the world - and what they think should change.

At Heard, we’ve been changing cultural perceptions for 16 years. Our mission is: to create conversations about social issues that change minds and develop the conditions for lasting social change. We’ve worked on shifting narratives about poverty and economic injustice since 2018. Highlights include shaping a storyline about a young carer living in poverty on Emmerdale (audience: 4 million) and a guide for media on reporting poverty, co-produced with our networks with lived experience and the National Union of Journalists.

This project on shifting the narrative on the economy seeks to centre the voices of people with lived experience of economic injustice to reshape how we talk about the economy. We will be co-creating powerful, accessible language that helps changemakers engage the public in meaningful conversations about economic change.

We’re looking for 8 people who:

  1. know what it’s like to feel the effects of today’s economy. That could include things like:
Low pay, insecure work, or job loss
    - Struggling to access healthcare, housing, education, or childcare
    - Feeling the impact of cuts to public services in your area
    - Working in unstable or underpaid sectors like care, retail, or gig work
    - Experiencing mental health challenges linked to financial or social pressures
    - Feeling excluded from the systems and decisions that shape your life
  2. Want to help change how the economy is talked about
  3. Are open to sharing ideas, reflecting, and creating with others

If this sounds like you, and you want to help shift the conversation, we’d love to hear from you.

What’s involved:

You’ll take part in four workshops between October and March, working alongside us and others to develop more relatable, powerful ways to talk about the economy. Your ideas will help shape how the media, campaigners, and creatives tell stories about economic issues - grounded in real life and real experiences.

You’ll be paid for your time and contributions. You don’t need any special knowledge or experience - just your voice, your perspective, and a willingness to get involved.

The workshops will be online and/or hybrid. Heard will cover travel costs where required.

How to apply:

Please complete this short form by 16th October 2025. (Deadline has been extended)
If you’d prefer to do it over the phone, we’re happy to support that.

We may invite you for a short conversation to learn more about each other and make sure the project is the right fit.

If you are invited to take part, the first workshop will be online on Thurs 6th November time tbc.

How do we use your data?
Heard champions diversity, equity and inclusion. We believe in a just society and in the benefit for all gained from the richness of diverse experiences and expressions within our work.

Through this project, Heard actively seeks to increase diversity and address disadvantage and inequality. Under the provisions made for Positive Action in the Equality Act 2010 Heard may, in the event of identifying two or more applicants of equal merit, give preference to an applicant/s that are from a group that is disproportionately underrepresented or otherwise disadvantaged.

If you get involved with the Economy project, we take a note of your name, email address, phone number. That’s to make sure we can get in touch with you. We will also ask for your age and address. That’s so we can build the group of people who are taking part in the Economy project, and make sure this group has a range of experiences.

We might store information about any access needs – for example if someone has hearing difficulties. We use this to make sure you’re comfortable at any events you come to. We will never share this information about you outside of the Heard team, unless you give us really clear permission to do so.

By filling out this form, you agree to Heard holding and using your data in the above ways.
