Green spaces can significantly benefit children’s physical, mental and social development - from infancy into adulthood. In his book, Last Child in the Woods (2005), journalist and author Richard Louv summarized much of the research on the importance of nature in child development and signaled an alarm that today’s loss of freedom to roam their neighborhoods and fading bond with nature would have negative health effects on young children. He called the effect “nature-deficit disorder.” Since then, many studies have confirmed Louv’s prognosis and emphasized the need for more green spaces, parks, and opportunities for children to connect to the outdoors.
With this, Weekend Wild Child collaborates and partners with the Arroceros Urban Forest Park and City Government of Manila in spearheading a holistic environmental education for families, groups and schools with young children, within and around the city, to participate in a half-day urban forest nature-school program. We are committed to bringing this kind of education because we believe in the importance of (1) exposing children to outdoor time and green spaces to aid in their overall development and (2) educating individuals at a very young age about environmental protection and conservation.
