Erna Badstieber Paws & Claws Adoption Center – Adoption Requirements

To be considered for adoption, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Age Requirement: You must be 19 years or older. Valid identification will be checked.

  2. Landlord Approval: If you rent, you must have the knowledge and consent of your landlord. We will contact landlords prior to completing an adoption.

  3. Home Checks: You must be willing to allow a home visit if requested by Paws & Claws staff. Refusal to allow a home check may result in denial of your application.

  4. Pet Health Requirements: All current pets in your household must be spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccines. Applications not meeting this requirement may be denied.

  5. Financial & Time Commitment: You must be able and willing to provide proper care, including training, medical treatment, and general upkeep, for the adopted animal.

  6. Background Checks: Paws & Claws reserves the right to perform background checks on applicants.

  7. Meet & Greet Requirement: All applicants must participate in a meeting or interaction with the animal prior to adoption to ensure compatibility.

  8. Veterinary References: Applicants must provide the contact information of their current or past veterinarian(s) for reference.

  9. Special Needs / Medical Care: Applicants must be willing and able to provide necessary care for any medical or behavioral needs the animal may have.

  10. Surrender Policy: If you surrender your adopted pet after the initial 7-day trial period, a $100 surrender fee will apply.

  11. Complete Application: Incomplete applications will be denied..

  12.   All adoption applications are kept on file for six (6) months from the date submitted. After six months, applications are recycled/discarded, and anyone still interested in adopting will be required to complete and submit a new adoption application.

Adoption Acknowledgment & Policies

Thank you for applying to adopt from the Erna Badstieber Paws & Claws Adoption Center! We receive a high volume of applications and strive to review them as quickly as possible. Please feel free to call us regarding the status of your application.

By signing below, you acknowledge and agree to the following:

Background Checks: We perform background checks on all applicants.

Home Checks & Landlord Verification: Paws & Claws reserves the right to perform a home visit if deemed necessary. Refusal to allow a home visit will result in automatic denial of the adoption. We also contact landlords and check local cities/towns for breed restrictions to ensure compliance with rental agreements and municipal laws.

Adoption Timing: We do not allow same-day adoptions. The adoption process may take up to 72 hours.

Animal Availability: Submission of an application does not guarantee approval for the specific animal listed, as multiple applications may be received for the same animal.

Return Policy & Surrender Fee:

Animals may be returned for a full refund within the first 7 days.

After 7 days, returned animals are treated as owner surrenders. A $100 surrender fee will apply.

Application Accuracy: By signing, you certify that all information provided is true and accurate. Any misrepresentation may result in loss of adoption privileges.

Authorization: You authorize Paws & Claws to contact veterinarians, other humane societies, landlords, or other references to verify information provided in this application.

Right to Refuse: The Erna Badstieber Paws & Claws Adoption Center is a non-profit organization and reserves the right to deny or refuse service to any applicant for any reason that ensures the safety and well-being of our animals.

Adopter Responsibility: You acknowledge that adoption is a lifelong commitment, and you are willing and able to provide proper care, including medical attention, training, and time, for the adopted animal.

Behavior / Temperament Disclaimer: Animals’ behaviors can change or be unpredictable. Paws & Claws does its best to describe each animal’s personality, but we cannot guarantee behavior or compatibility. Adopters assume responsibility for proper supervision and training.

Medical Disclaimer: Animals are adopted in good faith. Paws & Claws is not responsible for future medical issues beyond those disclosed at the time of adoption.

Photo / Media Release (Optional): By adopting, you consent to photos or updates of your adopted pet being shared for educational or promotional purposes.

Multi-Pet Household Responsibility: Adopters are responsible for properly introducing the adopted pet to existing animals in the household.

Compliance with Laws: Adopters agree to comply with all local laws and ordinances regarding pet ownership, licensing, and care.
