2019 Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Application
The YMCA of Greater Boston Overnight Camps Leadership Development Programs are experience-based courses for young adults to discover, practice, and hone their leadership potential in a variety of situations within the environment of North Woods and Pleasant Valley Camps. The goal of the program is to train these young adults in their personal leadership style and other leadership skills to bring back to their various communities - hopefully including North Woods and Pleasant Valley Camps, as camp leaders and future staff members - to better themselves and those around them.

The Counselor-In-Training (CIT) Program is a selective four week fee-based program and is the second year of our leadership development program. During this program, participants join us to learn about teaching and counseling styles as well as what being a strong camp counselor and supporting campers looks like. Participants also generally take a lifeguard training course. CITs are expected to be strong, independent, and focused on helping create a better community for all. Through this program, they will gain valuable hands-on experience working with youth, leading programs and activities, and working with staff in program conception, creation, and execution. The CIT Program staff provide frequent feedback and guidance. CITs are evaluated throughout the program in order to support them in honing their skills and becoming the best counselors they can be.

The first year of our leadership development program is the Leaders-in-Training (LIT) Program, which focuses on broad leadership skills and fostering a sense of community at camp. Applicants for the CIT Program are welcome regardless of if they've participated in the LIT Program. The third and final year of our leadership development program is the Assistant Counselor (AC) Program. ACs are staff members who live with campers and teach classes; they are provided with additional support throughout this hands-on program.

Applicants to the CIT Program are measured based on their applications and interviews as well as evaluations from being a camper/LIT and references from community leaders and family. Every year we are forced to turn away many good applicants because of the volume of applications we receive and the limited spots available. Those who are fortunate enough to be chosen to join us should use the four core values (caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility) to conduct themselves professionally and be caring and respectful of those not admitted. Acceptance to the program can be altered at any time.

Please fill out the application below to the best of your ability and be as thorough as possible. We ask that the applicants themselves fill out the following application - while asking family members for advice is perfectly fine, we want to hear applicants' own voices. This is a great first step toward independent leadership development!

Thank you, and good luck!

The CIT Program is designed for young adults who will be 16 years of age by June 15, 2019.
Please contact our Camping team if you have any questions about this cut off date. We understand that some of our interested campers/LITs from 2018 will not be 16 before our summer season begins and we ask that they reach out directly to either Scott Campbell for North Woods (SCampbell@ymcaboston.org) or Beth Dales for Pleasant Valley (EDales@ymcaboston.org) to make a plan for the 2019 season.
Application due NOVEMBER 11, 2018 - 11:59 pm (Notification of decisions will be sent out January 14th)
We encourage applicants to work hard on their applications and to submit them as soon as possible for best chances of admission to the program.
