Trasnational Masculinities: Consumerism and Commercialisation in Danmei Adapted Web-Drama The Untamed (陈情令)
Participant Information Sheet

You are being invited to take part in a Ph.D. research project. Before you decide whether or not to participate, it is important for you to understand why the research is being conducted and what it will involve. Please read the following information carefully.

What is the purpose of the research?

I am conducting research into the fan perception of Chinese masculine expression, in particular male homosexuality,  in danmei adapted web-drama The Untamed (2019). The research focuses on a number of issues related to the production, adaptation, and consumption of danmei media content, such as The Untamed (2019). The purpose of the study is to examine how the series has been interacted with, distributed, and watched by fans within the mediascape of Weibo and X.

Your participation is entirely voluntary – you do not have to participate if you do not wish to. However, due to the anonymised nature of the information,  if you decide to participate but later wish to withdraw from the study, then you are free to withdraw up to one week after the survey has been completed, without giving a reason and without penalty. If at any time you feel uncomfortable or do not want to continue answering these questions, please feel free to exit the survey.

Why have I been invited to take part?

You have been invited to participate in this study because you have been identified as over the age of eighteen, are a fan of the danmei adapted web-series The Untamed (陈情令) (2019) and hold prior knowledge of its literary counterpart The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (魔道祖师). You also possess a fan account on social media sites Weibo and/or X (previously known as Twitter).  If you are interested in taking part, please continue to read the Participant Information Sheet for further information.

An analysis of the project at the end of the study may be presented to interested parties and published in academic journals and related media. Please note that all information presented in any reports or publications will be anonymous and unidentifiable.

If required, you may receive a summary of the project results by e-mail or post. You can indicate on the consent form whether you would like to receive a summary of the study results.
