Love YouTube? Hate misinformation? Apply to be a MediaWise Teen Fact-Checker!

MediaWise is a groundbreaking digital media literacy project that aims to teach people of all ages how to sort fact from fiction online. One of the key components of MediaWise is the Teen Fact-Checking Network (TFCN). For this role, we are looking for high school students interested in fact-checking viral misinformation to help us create a 30-part YouTube series.

Through the International Fact-Checking Network, MediaWise received funding from YouTube (via the Google News Initiative) to produce 30 HIGH QUALITY fact-checks specifically formatted for YouTube. These fact-check videos will debunk false claims found on YouTube and teach crucial media literacy skills.

Students will have the opportunity to learn from and work with journalists at the Poynter Institute as well as PolitiFact.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
* On-camera talent: We're looking for teens who are comfortable speaking on camera and able to carry a YouTube series. These Teen Fact-Checkers are expected to pitch stories, write scripts and record their fact-checks. If you are selected as on-camera talent, you will be sent a filming kit (microphone, lighting equipment, ect.) *Student must have a phone that can film in 1080HD or camcorder of their own* Editing experience is a plus, but not required. NOTE: For this application, you will be required to submit a video of yourself.

* Researcher/Fact-Checkers: Not comfortable on camera? No problem. We're looking for teens to scour YouTube to flag potential misinformation. These Teen Fact-Checkers are expected to pitch stories weekly, research, and write scripts for the series that can be transformed into text-only articles for poynter.org.

COMMITMENT:
This project will begin Dec. 7 and last through April 30th. We will have a mandatory YouTube best practices training on Dec. 17th. Teen Fact-Checkers are expected to pitch stories weekly and produce a minimum of two fact-checks a month.

You will be compensated per fact-check.

DEADLINE:
Applications close Nov. 29, 2020
