This Spring, you can celebrate plastic awareness action with Cafeteria Culture and the Urban School Foods Alliance for an entire week: April 17 - April 24, 2024 (or any day)!

We'd love to hear about your plans and any suggestions for making Plastic Free Lunch Day a success!

Want to do something, but not sure where to start?

First, show our inspirational award-winning student-led movie Microplastic Madness as a first step! Teachers, administrators, students, and school food staff can show the movie for free from March 1 - April 30, 2024.
Then, take action! Suggestions below.

We hope that after screening Microplastic Madness, you and your class or school will be ready to take a plastic action and receive a Microplastic Madness Achievement Certificate.

Please indicate which of the following actions you would like to take. Only one is required but you may check more than one.

Awareness Campaign - Conduct a Plastics Creative Messaging Campaign (Students create art, media, or academic works to inform others about plastic harms.)

Audit - Conduct a PARTIAL (DIY) cafeteria plastic waste audit (e.g., audit all plastics in a small or large sample of school or home lunch; audit all straws or juice boxes (with 3 pieces of plastic each) used in one lunch period.

Audit - Conduct a FULL cafeteria plastic waste audit (all plastic waste produced during single lunch period).

Audit - Conduct audit but unsure of details.

Foodware Change - For one day, place utensils out of sight and provide only when students request them.

Foodware Change - For one day, eliminate utensils by serving only finger foods.

Foodware Change - For one day, place cups out of sight and provide only when students request them.

Foodware Change - For one day, eliminate plastic or "compostable" straws.

Foodware Change - Ditch disposable utensils & switch to stainless utensils.

Foodware Change - Ditch disposable plastic drinking cups (or other dishware) & switch to non-plastic reusables.

Foodware Change - Ditch disposable trays or plates and switch to reusable trays or plates. If the tray comes in contact with food, we recommend using non-plastic trays.

Packaging Change - Instead of pre-packaged single-serving condiment packets, serve condiments from bulk dispenser.

Packaging Change - Instead of pre-packaged single-serving sauce (salad dressing, dipping sauce), serve sauce from bulk container.

Packaging Change - Instead of pre-packaged single-serving food cup (applesauce, yogurt, pudding), serve food from bulk container.

Packaging Change - Work with your school foods director to end cafeteria practice of wrapping or packaging food items (sandwiches, burritos) into single-servings and, instead, serve bulk from half or full pan covered with foil.

Packaging Change - Work with your school foods director to end cafeteria procurement of single-serving individually packaged food.

Our funders make it possible for us to share Microplastic Madness and would like to know that, after watching the film, viewers took additional action to protect student health and the environment. We will not share any personal data.
