MCGATE Officer Application
Maryland Coalition for Gifted and Talented Education (MCGATE) is a state affiliate organization of the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) whose purpose is:

To advocate for an appropriate education and services to meet the needs of diverse gifted and talented learners throughout the state of Maryland.
To educate families, caregivers, and the community about the needs of the gifted and talented.
To support local associations dedicated to the interests of the gifted and talented.
To inform local, state, and other public and private institutions about the needs of gifted and talented individuals.
To promote advocacy and action at local, state, and national levels.
To facilitate a statewide communications network to implement these goals.

The positions of President and Secretary are up for election for terms starting 9/1/2020. Executive Committee officers are expected to attend four quarterly meetings (virtually or in-person), occasional conference calls between quarterly meetings, submit written reports prior to each board meeting, maintain active membership status, and perform other duties of their offices as described below.

Duties and Responsibilities: President
The President is to preside at all meetings. In the absence or disability of the Treasurer, or as needed, the President may sign or endorse checks, drafts or notes; the President shall co-sign with Treasurer drafts or checks when required by banking policy or regulations. The President appoints the Nominations and Elections Committee, Bylaws Committee, standing committee chairs and members, and other chairs as provided in the Constitution. The President shall perform other such duties as may be designated by the Board of Directors and has the usual powers of supervision and management as may pertain to the office of President. Other responsibilities may include the following:

* Serve on the Executive Committee and attend/lead board meetings and executive officer meetings.
* Submit quarterly reports prior to board meetings.
* Serve as an ex-officio member on standing committees.
* Assist with the MCGATE fundraising and membership drives.
* Serve as representative to the NAGC state affiliate group.
* Provide new officer training with the executive committee officers.
* Lead the organization's strategic planning and progress toward goals.
* Attend the annual NAGC Leadership Breakfast at convention when possible. (Breakfast is included in affiliate dues but conference travel and attendance is not.)
Duties and Responsibilities: Secretary
The Secretary shall record and maintain all minutes of the quarterly Executive Committee meetings, general meetings, and any special meetings, distribute them to the Executive Committee for approval, and ensure they are available to the membership at large. The Secretary shall serve on at the Social Media and Communications Committee and shall fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the President. Designated responsibilities may include the following:

* Serve on the Executive Committee and attend all board meetings and executive board meetings.
* Submit quarterly reports prior to board meetings.
* Serve on the membership and social media/communications committees.
* Assist with the MCGATE fundraising and membership drives.
* Maintain records of all official correspondence.
* Maintain volunteer hours and provide president with an annual log for members for awards purpose.
* Prepare meeting agendas in collaboration with president.
* Take attendance and meeting minutes and share with board.
* Collect officer quarterly reports and prepare with meeting agenda and documents in advance of board meetings.
* Periodically review bylaws and propose necessary amendments as appropriate.
