The Chinatown Service Center has been informed that the LA Chinatown Postal Unit will be permanently closed on September 30th, 2025, following the termination of its contract by USPS. This contract postal unit, which has been serving Chinatown since 1999, had been informed that the termination decision was not due to any performance issues but rather to the fact that "there are nearby postal facilities that are able to fully serve the community."
In light of this news, we are writing to our elected officials to urge them to stop this closure. You can read this letter of support below. Our community deserves continued, equitable access to essential postal services that are both culturally and physically accessible. Please help us save the LA Chinatown Contract Postal Unit by signing on to this letter.

Letter Text:
"Dear Congressman Gomez,
We write to express our deep concern regarding the planned closure of the Chinatown
postal unit. This small but vital outpost is an irreplaceable lifeline for our community,
particularly for our senior residents and limited English proficient neighbors.
Los Angeles Chinatown is home to one of the highest concentrations of older adults in
the city. Unlike younger or more mobile populations, our elderly neighbors cannot easily
transition to online services or travel long distances to alternative locations, they rely on
in-person postal services and are the frequent users of this postal unit. Equally critical
is the in-language support this postal unit provides. For many in our neighborhood,
English is not their first language. Having staff who can communicate in Chinese and
other languages is not a convenience but a necessity. The closure of this unit would
impose a disproportionate hardship on elderly and immigrant residents who depend on
trusted, linguistically and physically accessible postal services.
The Chinatown postal unit is more than just a facility; it is part of the neighborhood,
and its staff are our neighbors. Many in the community remember buying prepaid
overseas calling cards years ago from the same familiar faces that serve them today.
Eliminating this postal unit would not only erode access to essential government
services and further marginalize one of Los Angeles’ oldest immigrant communities but also displace one of our long-standing and trusted community institution.
We strongly urge you to advocate against this closure and explore alternative solutions
to preserve this critical service. Our community deserves continued, equitable access to
essential postal services that are both culturally and physically accessible.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
Sincerely,"
