What is the OpenHome Grant Program?

You are applying for OpenHome's inaugural grant program, with an opportunity to receive up to $50,000 to build your project. Join our Discord, where you’ll have access to a lively community of developers working on AI-powered voice projects and thinking about the implications of voice-first AI applications.

Who are we? OpenHome is the first open-source AI smart speaker. We are a community of developers and designers building AI-driven voice applications and experiences.

What are we looking for? We are looking for passionate, proactive, and creative individuals/teams interested in building novel, human-centered AI-powered voice applications. 

We’re interested in projects that meet any or all of these elements:

  • Technical Advancement: Projects that present a significant technical advancement to the field.

  • Impactful: Voice-first projects that re-imagine interactions between humans and our devices.

  • Intuitive: Applications that anticipate human needs, provide a seamless experience, that seem almost “human-like”.

  • Delightful: Applications that spark joy, surprise or insight. 

  • Interactive: Projects that integrate frequent, natural, bidirectional interaction with users.

Example applications:

  • Therapist Guide: A companion for therapy sessions that provide personalized prompts and exercises.

  • Sports Betting: An app that allows users to easily place sports bets.

  • AI Girlfriend/Boyfriend: an AI partner for companionship.

  • Interactive Storytelling Adventures: an immersive, storytelling game where players can influence the plot by making choices through voice commands.

  • Language Tutor: Helps learn languages through lessons and conversations.

  • Daily Voice Journal: Create daily voice notes with reflective prompts. Organizes a verbal diary with recording and recall.

  • Sustainable Living Advisor: A voice-first app offering tips on reducing waste, recycling, conserving water, and other eco-friendly practices.

General Milestones and Timeline:

  • Dev Kit Tier - Accepted applications will receive $100 to purchase a Dev Kit (Raspberry Pi kit + microphone + speaker).

  • Community Development - Submit a Github repo, engage in community discussions, submit project updates.

  • Completed Demo - Submit a demo of a working prototype and submit open-source code.

  • Live Integration into OpenHome - Code review, successful integration of project into core OpenHome system.

  • Critical Selected Feature - Develop critical and novel features for OpenHome.
