The event will be held at the IMAN Center in Culver City on Wednesday, November 14, 2018.
Spotlight is New Ground’s annual storytelling event. Held in the late fall, we invite our community to gather and explore a theme we believe will resonate powerfully, for tellers and listeners, alike.
This year’s theme is Taking a Risk. We’re starting early in the year, to give you all time to think about what you might want to say about risk taking, in these times, and to refine your thoughts into powerful communications.
Consider the phrase Taking a Risk in as broad a context as you like. It might mean stepping up, stepping out; speaking up, speaking out. Or it might mean something else to you entirely.
We’re looking for six brave souls—Muslim or Jewish—who have ideas for stories about risk, a strong desire to tell them, and the willingness to work together to make them as strong and compelling as possible.
Most Spotlight stories have been based on personal experience, but if you have a story you want to tell that isn’t, go ahead and submit it. The most important thing is your desire to speak.
How to submitDescribe your idea, as simply and clearly as possible, in 500 words or less, on the form below. If you have more than one idea, make multiple submissions.
The deadline for submissions is July 31, 2018.We’ll get back to you by August 7, 2018.
Stories for Spotlight are developed in a group process workshop facilitated by Stacie Chaiken, who runs What’s the Story? an LA-based workshop for people who want to make powerful stuff, based on personal material. If your idea is selected for Spotlight, we will ask you to commit to participating in a minimum of four group sessions, beginning in early September, in addition to a dress rehearsal at the Iman Center on the evening of Tuesday, November 13 and the November 14 event.
