Acceptable Use of Braver Angels Managed Online Accounts
Some Braver Angels volunteers may be granted access to online platforms (Google Workspace, Action Network, etc.)ย to access data, communication and collaboration tools for the purposes of their work with and communications on behalf of the organization.
Our general policy is to provision such accounts if a member of the BA National staff, or one or more field leaders (e.g. Alliance Co-Chairs, State Coordinators, Regional Leads, or other unit or project leader) deems it appropriate to grant a volunteer their own Braver Angels account.
These accounts are ultimately the property of the Braver Angels national organization, and as such they are to be understood as a privilege that can be revoked at any time pursuant to the needs of our mission.ย As guidance to users, such accounts are to be used in accordance with the following:
1. The account should be used for Braver Angels business. ย Because Braver Angels empowers volunteers to lead in more ways than is possible for our National organization to directly oversee, we rely on field units to abide by the Braver Angels Way in their communication and collaboration as it relates to all use of our branded communication tools.
The Braver Angels Way
We state our views freely and fully, without fear.
We treat people who disagree with us with honesty, dignity and respect.
We welcome opportunities to engage those with whom we disagree.
We believe all of us have blind spots and none of us are not worth talking to.
We look for common ground where it exists and, if possible, find ways to work together.ย
We believe that, in disagreements, both sides share and learn.
In Braver Angels, neither side is teaching the other or giving feedback on how to think or say things differently.
2. Communications should not harm the mission of Braver Angels.ย In general, this risk can and should be mitigated through consultation and collaboration across differences of perspective.
3. Use of any contact information or other biographical information about people that is accessed within the account should be limited to official Braver Angels business, and the use of member or subscriber data should be handled carefully, so as to protect user privacy.ย
Here are some concrete examples of behaviors that are explicitly against this guidance:ย
- Using a BA email address for personal business or to primarily benefit an alternate organizationโs purposes.
Engaging in activities under the auspices of the organization that are not guided by The Braver Angels way (above), for example, by using language in a manner that could be reasonably considered contrary to the guidance of the Braver Angels way by a balanced group of peers.ย
Using or sharing information in ways that do not respect member privacy.ย For example, mass-emailing contacts by placing large numbers of email addresses in the โToโ field of a traditional email exposes membersโ contact information to many others without their permission.ย In this case, using the BCC field would be the preferred practice.
Who determines whether a personโs account should be removed, and how is the determination made?
- The recommendation for account removal can be made by anyone, and is reviewed by the COOโs office, in consultation with the BA Support Team and/or relevant field leaders.
In some cases the short-term risks associated with not removing access may require a temporary account suspension until such time as a full determination can be made by the office of the COO.
