Higher Heights Youth Empowerment Programs, Inc. (HHYEP), founded in 2004, is a local college access program that provides college-planning services to high school students, grade 9 thru 12, and their families, throughout the New Haven and Fairfield Counties.
Our mission is to change the lives of under-represented college bound students and Empower, Encourage, and Equip them to obtain a post-secondary education. .
Our organization’s goal is to provide more equitable access of college preparatory resources and services to a broad range of students and their families who have a history of being deprived and who as a consequence are underrepresented in the pool of academically high-achieving students.
Summer College Application Bootcamp
This summer, from July 3 - July 28 Higher Heights Youth Empowerment Program is offering a FREE new program aimed at helping local high school students who are entering the 12th grader prepare for their college journey. This program is designed for any student entering their senior year of high school and is modeled after our 14 year college access program. Each session is being taught by trained College Access Advisors who New Haven Promise Scholars currently enrolled in college. “The college process can be scary and it's not uncommon for young people to refrain from making the attempt because they don't know where to start. We are excited to provide this interactive and informational opportunity to our greater community” said Founder Dr. Chaka Felder-McEntire.
The hands-on student centered program will cover topics including: jumpstarting the application process, crafting a college essay or personal statement, pro tips for conducting a college search, navigating college resources, organizing the application process and a look at the new common application, and the new FAFSA application process, financial aid basics and scholarship searches. Sessions are available in the morning from 10am-1:30pm. The program will be held on the campus of Urban League Training Center in New Haven. The program is provided at no cost. Students will receive take home materials.
Spend 2 weeks working with our trained College Advisors and be prepared to enter you senior year knowing that you have completed your:- College Applications- FAFSA Application- Scholarship Applications- High School Resume
Along side our College Advisors you will receive a personalized selection of college/universities that match your career interest, testing scores, financial match, and academic skills.
WHO?The 2018 Summer College Application Bootcamp is for students entering the 12th grade next school year. Open to all students who are able to participate.
COSTS?Because the program is being offered at no-cost to families, students must make a full-time commitment to attend every day of the program. Parents and students must sign a commitment that students will give a 100% commitment to the program. Students who are not able to attend every session are not encouraged to apply.
WHEN?Sessions are offered in the morning and the afternoon. Students are to register for only 1 session!Session 1- morning- July 2 - July 13 10:00am - 1:30pm
