As a Georgian citizen, I urge you to take immediate action to close the obscenity exemption currently in place for K-12 libraries in Georgia.
The education and well-being of our children must be safeguarded, and it is essential to ensure that K-12 libraries, which serve as valuable educational resources, do not inadvertently provide access to obscene and harmful material.
The obscenity exemption, as it stands, allows developmentally inappropriate materials to be used in K-12 libraries without adequate oversight and regulation. That is why we need to bring attention to
Georgia's SB74—legislation intended to remove this obscenity exemption.
SB74 defends libraries and responsible librarians as they remain a safe place for our students and communities. GA State Senators passed
SB74 and have sent it to the GA House of Representatives
Judiciary Non-Civil Committee. We need you to click on each name, contact their office and ask them to vote yes on SB74.
However, there is a clear distinction between protecting freedom of information and exposing children to explicit and inappropriate content.
It is time for our legislators to act.
Having these developmentally inappropriate books in our K-12 libraries is currently LEGAL.
Pornography and obscenity will not stop until this law is passed. All other bills fall short, and I believe the following steps should be taken.
I support this effort to close the obscenity exemption for K-12 libraries and protect the well-being of our children.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
