WHAT IS TTSJ?

Texas Therapists for Social Justice (TTSJ) is a coalition of mental health professionals and students committed to integrating social justice into every aspect of our work. We believe that culturally responsive, anti-oppressive care is central to ethical and effective mental health practice—especially in a state as diverse as Texas.

Our mission is to advance social justice within mental health care by remaining committed to and actively promoting equity, inclusion, and accessibility. We engage in advocacy, education, and organizing to challenge systemic oppression, expand access to affirming care, and support the wellbeing of marginalized communities.

Our work is grounded in the principles of justice, liberation, intersectionality, and cultural humility. We recognize the colonial and oppressive roots of our field and strive to dismantle white supremacy and other systems of harm both within our profession and in the broader world. We are committed to sustainable practices, transparency, and ongoing learning and unlearning as we work toward collective liberation.

WHO CAN BECOME A MEMBER OF TTSJ?
TTSJ membership is open to those who meet all of the following criteria:
1. Licensed Mental Health Professional (or student) in Texas
  • Individuals with a professional license under the Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) of Texas, i.e. LPCs, LMFTs, Social Workers, or Psychologists,
  • Associates under any of those licenses, or
  • Students enrolled in a related graduate program.
If you would like to join but do not fit into these categories, please reach out to us at hello@texastherapists.org.
2. Alignment with TTSJ Values

  • Advocacy - We recognize that the personal is political and believe therapists have a responsibility to use our voices and positions to challenge oppression and promote collective liberation. Therefore we actively engage in advocacy, education, policy, and community organizing work to address the systemic injustices that harm the mental health and well-being of all.
  • Anti-Oppression and Accountability - We will continually educate ourselves on ways that our biases and systemic structures cause harm. We make it a priority to dismantle any forms of oppression and injustice and will make efforts towards repair when harm occurs.
  • Commitment to Continual Learning - We recognize social justice work is an ongoing process that requires never-ending learning and unlearning.
  • Cultural Humility and Awareness - We will uplift and center voices of marginalized communities and will recognize and work to dismantle the biases we hold, both individually and as an organization. We acknowledge the settler-colonial, white supremacist origins of the mental health field and seek to dismantle the systems that uphold it.
  • Interdisciplinary - We understand that drawing from diverse clinical perspectives and lived experiences enriches our collective understanding of justice and care. Including licensed professionals across all four of BHEC's member boards, as well as graduate students, strengthens our capacity to challenge systemic inequities and support one another across stages of professional development.
  • Intersectionality - We understand that intersectionality plays a major part in the experience of social injustices. We honor and acknowledge how race, gender, sexuality, class, disability and other factors impact experiences.
  • Justice - We will ensure equity in the distribution of opportunities, resources, and accountability, and will be justice-minded in the ways we advocate, educate, and organize.
  • Liberation - We make it a priority to center the most impacted and marginalized; we recognize that injustice for any is an injustice to all. Therefore we will pursue liberation for every marginalized people.
  • Sustainability - We understand that justice work needs to be rooted in sustainable practices and as a result we seek to support members in care as we continue the fight against injustice.
  • Transparency - We recognize the power inherent in the profession and seek to dismantle that through demonstrating transparency in our organizational processes.

3. Commitment to Continued Education
Though specific CE requirements may vary by license type, each member of TTSJ is committed to earning at least three (3) CE hours of "Cultural Competence" OVER their board-required minimum each license renewal cycle (every 2 years).

For example, if your board requires 3 hours of "Distinct Population" (previously known as "Cultural Competence") CEs, you will commit to earning those as well as an additional 3 CE hours of Cultural Competence, for a total of 6 CE hours. For students and provisionally licensed professionals who are not yet required to earn CE hours, you commit to earning 6 CE hours every 2 years.

Note: In this context, TTSJ understands "Cultural Competence" to mean education focused on expanding therapists’ ability to work effectively with clients across diverse identities and lived experiences. These trainings challenge bias, promote equity, and support practitioners in providing affirming, anti-oppressive, justice-oriented care, with an emphasis on intentionally marginalized communities.
