DoD SPWA Essay Contest 2018
The objective of this award is to encourage authorship by members and gain insight on approaches to professional development. Winning essays will be recognized at the SPWA Annual Awards ceremony in fall 2018 and on the SPWA website.

2018 Essay Topic:
What is the importance of professional development? How do you inspire others to pursue continual professional development?

Recognition:
Winners of an Essay Award may have their essays published on the DoD SPWA website and featured at an DoD SPWA meeting. Up to two winners will be selected each year from qualified essays. The Distinguished Essay Award winner receives $500 to use toward promoting continual professional development and Meritorious Essay Award winner receives $250. In addition, all winners receive a plaque, which is presented at the annual Awards celebration/meeting.

Award Criteria:
-Entrants must be members in good standing of the DoD SPWA at the time of submission and selection.
-Essays may not be from previously published articles.
-The SPWA theme is “Ready, Set, Grow.” Planning and execution of professional development opportunities is key to growing. Model ideas and plans will be shared with the membership.
-Essays must be original and must not exceed 6,000 characters (~1,000 words).

Deadline:
All essays must be submitted no later than August 31, 2018 to be considered by the selection panel. There is no exception to this deadline. Winners will be notified by email.

Award Selection Procedures
-A selection panel chaired by the Vice President, SPWA will make final recommendations to the President. The selection panel will include not less than four Board members. A judge must recuse him/herself if a conflict of interest exists. Nominee names will be removed for the review of essays.
-Essays will be judged on adherence to topic (how well the essay meets the contest topic), creativity, clarity, and readability (how well does the essay flow and is understandable), content (is the essay original and does it contain substantial content) and general administration (length, grammar, spelling, sentence structure, punctuation).
