Alder Commons Library!
Alder Commons is an all-ages community learning center in NE Portland where kids and adults alike can take classes and spend time freely. One of the rooms in the building is designated as a library and quiet space. This is where you come in! We are asking community members to contribute to a crowd-sourced library wishlist. With limited space, we want to make sure that we create a diverse and comprehensive wishlist of library books.
Our goal is to foster an intergenerational and multicultural community, so we are especially looking for books that focus on decolonization and deschooling. We hope to have many different books available from all types of life experiences and perspectives, especially those written by members of minority groups and marginalized communities. We'll have books for all types of learners and all ages; this is not just a children's library or just an adult library, rather, we're looking for books that run the gamut.
After the wishlist is developed, we will be working with Third Eye Books (
), a community-focused Black-owned bookstore here in Portland, to order the books through, and will be asking of community members to purchase them on our behalf as donations.
Please email Rachel (

What are 5 books (or more!) that we absolutely MUST have in our library (please include both title and author)? Think about books that you couldn't live without, or that have helped shape you in different ways. Books that have meant a lot to you, either personally or professionally or both, that maybe others haven't heard of. Books that have inspired you, or helped you see the world differently...
Any other feedback or ideas for the library? Ideas on genres/categories? Ideas for the layout and feel of the room?
