CARNATIONS – September 2024 Semi-Annual Feedback

The purpose of this questionnaire is to help us refine our planned objectives to address the needs of the Nation’s transportation system, and to share ideas on PI/student/CAB collaboration (CAB = CARNATIONS Advisory Board).  We very much need your feedback.  For suggestions not covered by the questions below please contact any of our PIs, e.g., pervan@iit.edu or joerger@vt.edu.

The 2023 CAB meeting pointed out that research efforts should include experimental validation.  We addressed this concern by sending students to RFI test events, acquiring advanced simulators and hardware, and testing whenever possible. In your opinion, would you say that the CARNATIONS Year 2 research plan is heading in the right direction and addresses the Nation’s needs?

Would you say that the CARNATIONS Year 2 research plan is relevant to your industry sector and that you can identify specific areas of collaboration?

Could you please share any recommendations you may have on the current CARNATIONS research projects that you have not had a chance to voice? (e.g., would you like to see more theoretical, applied, or application-specific research, etc. Any comment on specific topics?)  

Please describe any other aspect of resilient PNT not addressed in the Year 2 plan that CARNATIONS should prioritize in the next 1-to-5 years and that might be well suited for multi-university academic research?

Can you identify other research ideas that could be initiated by CARNATIONS and could grow to earn your company’s support?  (e.g., cost share equipment, engineering hours, student research support) 

The 2023 CAB meeting clearly indicated that CARNATIONS should focus on graduate students (MS, PhD) in Navigation.  Cyber threats, communications, transportation are also key to this program.

In response to CAB’s interest and opportunity offers with internship programs, we launched the CARNATIONS ERT.  Would you say that it is a good platform for you to recruit student interns?

Would you have any suggestions on how to improve CARNATIONS education and workforce development initiatives?

Are there other workforce development efforts that would be relevant to your current employees?  (e.g., workshop for professionals, professional courses, credential or certificate development, etc.). Would your organization be interested in providing funding for your employees to attend CARNATIONS workshops or short term online courses.

Can you foresee a path towards transferrable technology from CARNATIONS to your company?  For example, is there a product or service for which CARNATIONS could initiate the development?

Can you think of any other partners who should be on this advisory board?

Since Fall 2023, CARNATIONS has been organizing quarterly CAB subcommittee meetings, the in-person “CARNATIONS DAYS” review meeting over the summer, and now monthly research updates, which can be open to the CAB. We are working on publishing quarterly newsletter emails.
