Rules and Particiaption for Athlete

Required to be filled out once a year only.


Welcome to our sports program! The coaching staff is pleased that you are participating as an athlete this year. Without
doubt, Garden City Public Schools’ athletes are of the highest caliber. Every member of our athletic community will strive to
make sure that this season will be both enjoyable and rewarding. To aid you in achieving excellence in athletics, we have
adopted these rules for you to follow. By following these rules and focusing on the directions given to you by your coaches,
you will ensure that your experience as a high school athlete is fulfilling and productive.

The following rules govern our athletes throughout the school year:

A. PAYMENT:
All athletes must complete a form and submit payment of the “Pay to Participate” fee of $150.00, prior to the first
competition. Payments are done through PaySchools online.

B. NO DRINKING, STEALING, USE OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS, OR USE OF
ILLEGAL/UNPRESCRIBED/PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS.

1. Violators during the season (beginning with first practice week allowed by MHSAA) are removed from that
sport for the remainder of the season or 30 days from athletic activities which ever is greater, and cannot
return to any athletic team until counseled by coach. The athlete will not be eligible to participate in any
team events, gatherings, functions or banquets at the end of the season.

2. Violators (out-of-season) will miss the first 20% of the scheduled events in your next season of competition.
Counseling by coach prior to return. While on suspension, the athlete may not travel with the team or wear
the uniform on game day. (Note: Competition refers to “scheduled” games or meets; scrimmages are not
considered “scheduled” competition).

3. Violators the second time (in or out-of-season) will forfeit all rights to participate in all sports for one year
from the time that the training rule is broken and will be counseled by coach and school psychologist.

4. Third offense will carry an automatic suspension from all sports while a student at Garden City High School.

C. NO HAZING, BULLYING OR SEXUAL HARRASSMENT

D. Behavior:
If for any other reason you are suspended from school, the Coach and Athletic Director will review the case
and consider further punishment, if necessary. Athletes are expected to exercise good judgment both during
the season and off season. Athletes are reminded that they are representatives of Garden City Schools and
that they are not to engage in any questionable or illegal behavior. Moreover, athletes shall not promote or
condone questionable/illegal behavior via internet sources including but not limited to: Facebook, Myspace,
Twitter, Photo-Bucket, etc. Suspension or dismissal from the team are possible depending on the severity of
the offense.

E. You are expected to attend all practices. An excuse will be presented to your coach (or A.D., if coach is out of
building) before leaving school. If you are ill, please call and leave a message for your coach.

1. If you do not attend school during the day, you cannot practice (or participate in a schedule contest) unless
you had a pre-arranged absence through an administrator.

2. If you are sick three or more days you cannot practice without permission from your doctor or parents.

3. If you have an injury that requires you to see a doctor, you must have the doctor’s permission to return to
practice.

F. ATHLETIC INSURANCE

1. Present policy is to be covered by parents plan or purchase school plan. Visit the Athletics page on the High
School website for further information. You must have coverage.

G. TRAVELING TO AND FROM GAMES

1. Most of the time our teams travel by bus. You are expected to travel to and from the game by the
transportation provided. The coach can make the decision if parents request in person to take student home.
Parents may transport only their own student.

2. You will dress according to what the coach wants in your sport.

3. You represent Garden City High School while traveling as a team. We expect your conduct to be that of a
lady or gentlemen at all times. Violations will be handled by the coach.

H. EQUIPMENT
All equipment (includes uniforms) that is checked out to you is your responsibility during the sport season.
Deadline for return of equipment is one week after season or an administrator will request equipment or
suspend student until equipment is returned. You will be required to pay for lost or damaged uniforms.
DO NOT LOAN OR LET ANOTHER STUDENT ATHLETE TURN IN YOUR EQUIPMENT.
ALWAYS KEEP YOUR LOCKERS LOCKED.

I. GRADES

1. KEEP THE GRADES UP: Colleges may want you for your athletic ability, but if you do not have good grades, your chances are slim for getting an athletic scholarship.

2. All eligibility requirements must be completed prior to the official (MHSAA) start of the individual sport. At least a “C” GPA (2.0) had to be achieved in the semester prior to the start of the season. Those students transferring from another school district may not participate in a given sport, until their eligibility has been determined.

3. Grades will be checked the 4th week of first grading period and the 6th week for all others. If the students GPA is below a 2.0, they are ineligible for that week and grades will be check weekly until their GPA is above 2.0.

J. ATTENDANCE
School attendance and athletics go hand in hand. Good attendance is necessary to have the opportunity to get an education and earn good grades. Good attendance is also a necessity when participating on an athletic team. School policy for attendance will be carried over into athletics. Student athletes that come under an attendance contract will be not allowed to miss any class in which he/she has a contract. (i.e., no early dismissal will be approved for that athlete to go to an athletic contest, regional, League meet, etc.)

K. ASSUMPTION OF RISK
Participation in athletics places the individual at risk with regard to significant injury. These injuries range from sprains, strains and concussions to permanent disability and death. The likelihood of catastrophic injury is minimal, however, the potential does exist. The participant and Parent/Guardian recognize these facts and assume risk
