Grade 4 Outing to the Castle of Good Hope
Dear Parents

This quarter as part of our Project-Based Learning (PBL) experience, we’re creating a unique museum all about ourselves—telling our stories, reflecting on our personal histories, and exploring how we connect to the world around us. To deepen our understanding of history and heritage, we’re planning a visit to the Castle of Good Hope. Known locally as "The Castle" and originally called Kasteel de Goede Hoop in Dutch, this bastion fort was built in the 17th century and is one of Cape Town's most iconic landmarks. Once located on the coastline of Table Bay, the Castle is now situated in the heart of the city’s Central Business District after land reclamation shifted its position. Declared a historical monument in 1936 and a provincial heritage site, the Castle stands as the best-preserved example of 17th-century architecture in the world—thanks to restoration efforts in the 1980s. By visiting this remarkable site, we aim to explore the intersection of personal and collective history and gain a deeper appreciation of how architecture and heritage shape our stories.
