IPFW Pre-Service Teachers' Holocaust Symposium Application
This application is for a symposium that will be held in Fort Wayne 15-20 May 2016 on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). The symposium is organized by the IPFW Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (ipfw.edu/ihgs) and the Holocaust Education Committee of Temple Achduth Vesholom (templecav.org), a Reform Jewish congregation.

The six-day symposium will help prepare tomorrow's teachers to educate their students on the Holocaust and Holocaust-related events. Now more than ever, this education needs to take place in the classrooms of Indiana.

The program will combine teaching the history of conditions leading up to the Holocaust as well as the horrors of the Holocaust itself. It will also offer a description of successful programs that teachers have utilized in the past several years, along with observations on implementing them in Indiana. The instruction will be provided by educators who have established track records in Holocaust education, including scholars from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Students will be housed on the campus - with some meals provided - at no cost to the participants, thanks to the generosity of numerous granting agencies and donors. Limited reimbursements for transportation costs may also be available once applicants are accepted. Therefore, there should be only minimal expense for the participants.

The successful candidate ideally will be a senior who has achieved an outstanding academic record, and who is a major in a field relevant to the teaching of the Holocaust or other genocides at the junior high or high school level. In addition, the successful candidate must show how he or she is prepared to enter the teaching profession in Indiana.

We will begin consideration of all applications on 4 Mar 2016 and continue until we have selected all participants. If you have questions about the symposium, please contact carr at ipfw dot edu. Although we strongly prefer that you submit your application online, you can print off and submit a hard copy of your application to
