Summer '21 Effective Altruism Helsinki Fellowship Application
The Effective Altruism Helsinki Fellowship is an intensive and rewarding 8-week program for students to deeply engage with ideas & strategies for effectively improving the world. Fellows will combine the head and the heart, as they apply rigor & rationality to questions regarding morality & altruism. We are looking for students who have the ambition and drive to do the most good they can.

What does the Fellowship consist of?

In order to get the most out of this program, Effective Altruism Fellows should be:

- Passionate about helping others
- Driven to do as much good as they can
- Excited to dedicate their career to doing good and/or to donate a portion of their income to charity
- Open-minded and flexible, eager to update their beliefs in response to persuasive evidence
- Willing and able to commit ~3-4 hours per week for the summer (July and August)

We are committed to building a diverse cohort of Fellows. There is some evidence suggesting that underprivileged individuals tend to underestimate their abilities. We do not want the application process to dissuade potential candidates and we strongly encourage interested students to apply regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, ability, etc. We also encourage everyone from undergraduates to recent graduates, as well as individuals from all intellectual backgrounds and majors to apply.

Personal data inputted here will be processed by EA Helsinki members and deleted after 18 months.

We look forward to reading your application! :)

Read this text:
Worldview #1
The decision of which cause to work on is a matter of personal preference - whether you should focus on education, climate change, or the arts should be decided by which cause you are most passionate about.

Worldview #2
Suppose that you have the choice between a summer placement at two non-profit organisations. The first is close to your heart: providing disadvantaged children in your local community with access to free music lessons. The second is further from your existing interests: helping with the logistics for a mosquito bednet distribution programme that could prevent dozens of additional cases of malaria with your work. It seems like even if you had a personal attachment to the first cause, you wouldn't have sufficient reason to focus on it rather than the anti-malaria bednets. So the decision of which cause to work on should not be determined by what you are most passionate about.
How do the two worldviews described above compare? Does one seem more appealing than the other, or could they fit together in some cohesive way? (use ~5 mins) *
In a few sentences: please describe one occasion when you changed your mind in response to evidence. *
This could be a grand lifestyle-changing belief or a relatively insignificant belief is perfectly fine too.
If you have engaged with the Effective Altruism (EA) movement in any way previously, please briefly describe how (e.g. attended X/Y/Z event, read the EA Forum, etc.). *
Note: prior engagement with the EA movement is not a requirement for admission to the EA Helsinki Fellowship. We equally welcome new people to apply.
If I proceed to the next round of the application, I will be available for interview on:
(Please select *all* windows in which you will be available). If none of these time slots would work for you, please indicate your availability in the 'other' box. Note that the interview doesn't actually take two hours, only 15 minutes or so.
If I am offered a spot in the Fellowship, I will be available for weekly discussion on these time slots
We will use this information to pick the day of the week and time which best suits our admitted cohort. Please indicate *every* day and time on which you would expect to be available. We understand your schedule may not be completely set at this point so please give your best guess. If you absolutely cannot attend any of the options available, add your preferred day on "other."
