The cost of living crisis is a cost of learning crisis.
The 93% Club Lancaster is writing this open letter to call on Lancaster University to make a cost of living payment to all students, as a result of the cost of living crisis. The cost of living crisis is a cost of learning crisis and is detrimental to students well-being and their educational studies.
We are aware that the University of Manchester have set aside £9m to support students and are offering one off payments of up to £170 during this time of hardship. Other universities, including Queens University of Belfast, are following suit and we are waiting for Lancaster University to do so too.
Rises in student loans are dwarfed by soaring inflation and energy costs, meaning students are often faced with choosing between food, travel and heating. Recent research has stated that 11% of students are turning to food-banks (a massive 5% increase on last year). More and more students are being priced out of their education and we will not stand for this.
We are also aware of the work being done by the students union, but the University also should have a duty of care towards its students and their well-being. 'We believe that funding concerns should not stop any student with the talent to thrive' is a major statement on the University's website and we expect words to be matched with actions. Students need action before we reach breaking point and, as demonstrated by the University's most recent financial statements, it is clear that the University has the resources to help students in this time of need.
The cost of living crisis is a cost of learning crisis and we are calling on the University to make a cost of living payment to students.
