Call for Artists - Rain Play
Submission Deadline: Ongoing through Monday, January 7, 2019, 11:59 AM, PST.

Submissions will be considered as they arrive, pairing artists and businesses, and installing artwork as the program progresses.

Rain Play is part of the Artistic Encounters Program, produced by ArtCity Eugene and sponsored by City of Eugene Cultural Services

Overview:

Rain Play artwork encourages people to come downtown and experience art that is only visible when it rains! The art may take viewers on a scavenger hunt, it may draw people in to a large scale graphic novel scene, a zine or comic drawing, inspiring quotes, graphic art tiles, poetry, stories, games, and more.

Artwork will be applied during the daylight on weekdays during dry weather days between December 2018 and February 2019. All participating artists are required to use Rainworks spray, a water-resistant, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly product designed specifically to create sidewalk rain art. Rainworks spray will be provided by ArtCity to participating artists.

After an artwork is applied and the water resistant material is cured, participating artists will take a video of the art "magically" appearing when water is applied and share that video on social media using tags #rainplayeugene #artcityeugene #culturalservices #businesssponsorname #artistname #rainworks. ArtCity will promote the videos, the artists, and the sponsor businesses on social media and encourage the public to find the art. Videos will be archived on a dedicated Rain Play web page that promotes Rain Play art, the artists, and the businesses.

Selected Artists will receive:
$135 stipend for each one-hour time period that artist applies artwork.
$70 stipend for a ½-hour application.

Each artist will be responsible for purchasing and cutting out their own stencil materials prior to application. ArtCity is exploring partnerships from businesses that may participate by providing stencil cutting services.

Artworks will be sponsored by local businesses. Artists will be asked to create their works in the vicinity of sponsor businesses that are located downtown. Rain Play artwork signatures will include the artist's name and the business sponsor's name or logo. Signatures will be discrete and need not be an integral part of the artwork. Sponsoring businesses will not direct artwork content. ArtCity will curate installations and coordinate logistics with the City of Eugene regarding installation of artwork.

Submission Process:

Please submit photos of your artwork, your website, and your Rain Play concept. The selection committee understands the work samples submitted will not be the work that selected artists will create for Rain Play. However, the work submitted for review is expected to reflect the quality and professional artistry of the work selected artists will produce.

After reviewing submissions, ArtCity will confirm acceptance status via email.

Submission is free.
