The Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs) – the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – turn 80 years old in 2024. Established in the aftermath of World War II, the BWIs were designed to shape a new global economic order. However, their role and impact, particularly on countries in the Global South, have closely aligned with the colonial and extractive economies of their governing countries, rather than offering equitable or transparent global economic governance.

MENA Fem Movement and WEDO invite critical blog post submissions from a feminist global perspective with a focus on the Global South to mark this anniversary. A series of blogs will be co-published by both organizations, in Arabic and English, and launched at a webinar in July. We encourage posts that engage with the BWIs' history, policies, and ongoing influence from the vantage point of marginalized communities across the globe, especially women in the Global South. We intend for the blog series to amplify alternative viewpoints and feminist histories of the ongoing role of the Bank and the Fund in economic subordination, thereby to identify what needs to change in terms of our global economic and financial structures. 

Possible areas of exploration (not exhaustive):

• The BWIs and Gender Inequality: How have the BWIs' policies impacted women's access to education, healthcare, property rights, and economic participation in the Global South?

• Structural Adjustment and Austerity: How have the BWIs' structural adjustment programs and austerity measures affected women's wellbeing and social safety nets?

• Debt and Conditionalities: How have BWI loans and debt burdens impacted women's rights and development priorities in the Global South?

• The BWIs and Climate Justice: How do the BWIs' policies and financing practices intersect with environmental  and Climate degradation and its impact on women, especially in the Global South?

• Alternative Economic Models: What are feminist alternatives to the economic models promoted by the BWIs that would prioritize gender equality and sustainable development?

• The BWIs and Democratization: How have the BWIs' policies impacted democratic processes and institutions in the Global South, and how does this affect women's political participation?

• The BWIs and Social Movements: How have social movements, led by women's groups and others, challenged the BWIs' policies and advocated for alternative approaches?

Submission Guidelines:

• Blog posts should be between 1500-2500 words.

• Submissions can be in English or Arabic.

• The writing style should be engaging and accessible to a broad audience.

• Authors are encouraged to use clear and concise language, avoiding excessive jargon.

• Citations and references should be included according to a recognized academic style guide (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago).

• Authors can submit one blog post each.

• Please submit your photo and bio with the article.

Selection Criteria:

• Submissions will be selected based on their critical engagement with the BWIs from a critical decolonial feminist perspective.

• Originality, clarity, and persuasiveness of the arguments will be considered.

• Writing style and adherence to submission guidelines will also be factored in.

تحتفل مؤسسات بريتون وودز (BWIs) - البنك الدولي وصندوق النقد الدولي - بالذكرى الثمانين لتأسيسها في عام 2024. تم إنشاء مؤسسات بريتون وودز في أعقاب الحرب العالمية الثانية بهدف تشكيل نظام اقتصادي عالمي جديد. ومع ذلك، فإن دورهما وتأثيرهما، خاصة على دول الجنوب العالمي، يتسق تمامًا مع الاقتصادات الاستعمارية والاستخراجية للدول الحاكمة لهما، بدلاً من تقديم حوكمة اقتصادية عالمية عادلة أو شفافة.

إرشادات التقديم:

• يجب أن يتراوح طول المدونة بين 1500-2500 كلمة.
