York University Faculty Association representing approximately 1,650 faculty, librarians, archivists, and post-doctoral visitors at York University has recently been bargaining with the Employer, York University, to renew its Collective Agreement. York Administration has unfortunately applied the same tactics they used against other labour unions and student unions at York University over the last seven years-- Adopting false narratives about York's financial situation, misinforming the community about the unions' proposals, and threatening and endorsing police violence against the employees and students! 

The enrolment and revenue have been stable to a degree that some financial advisors rank York University among Canadian universities with highest profit. Yet, workers are underpaid, unions have to go on strike every few years to achieve their basic demands, and students are offered low-quality, high-cost education in over populated classes. 

Freedom of expression and assembly and collegial governance are core principles of community members. The admins' increasing infringement of democratic governance at York and reliance on external pressure on the community members including by the government and police has resulted in a hostile, unsafe, and toxic environment for students, faculty, and staff which resembles more a military base than an institution of higher education. 

While repeatedly claiming that the safety, wellbeing, and interest of the community members are their top priority, York administration has shown no regards for the wellbeing and quality of education for students and workers and the hardship they go through due to the admin's aggressive moves. In a recent instance, while in the early stages of bargaining, York administration acquired a No Board report through the Ontario Ministry of Labour which could result in locking out the YUFA members, a huge disruption to all academic matters at the University.

 We call on the York University administration to stop their aggressive moves, bargain in good faith with YUFA and move rapidly toward settlement, respect students and workers, and stop pushing on a pay freeze and restructuring!
