CCEM BACKGROUND:  registration

The Commonwealth will be hosting a Meeting of Ministers of Education, in hybrid format from 27 to 28 April 2022, prior to the Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting to be held from 10-11 May 2022.

The purpose is to strengthen the relevance of the contributions on education made by accredited organizations before the Communique of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is developed or revised. The high-level meeting will bring together ministers of Education from the 54 member countries as well as partners and stakeholders, to address educational priority issues towards the 2030 Agenda.

The proposed roundtables will focus on critical areas for recovery post-Covid-19 and rethinking education in the Commonwealth: financing of education; inclusive digital transformation; effective governance; transition from school to work.

Ministers and stakeholders will discuss concrete and decisive actions; the roundtables will present promising examples, including highlights from the 2021 Commonwealth Education Awards for Good Practice, as well as what remains to be done. The Meeting will be structured around 5-6 subthemes and guiding questions.

The proposed subthemes include:
i. Equitable access to learning and education
ii. Lessons learned from COVID-19 mitigation and recovery strategies
iii. Rethinking education for decent work and employability
iv. Redefining learning spaces: innovations, multiple pathways and flexible approaches
v. Financing of education including innovative financing
vi. Education for sustainability and a peaceful, cohesive Commonwealth

The Commonwealth Student Association is coordinating NSO, SU, and Student Leaders from the commonwealth countries to collate voices from the grassroots to make recommendations for the Communique of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that is upcoming in May.
