We, the undersigned midwives, call upon the largest organization representing midwives on Turtle Island, the American College of Nurse Midwives, to support an immediate cease fire in the ongoing bombardment in the Gaza strip.
We recognize that many people feel this is a complex situation and in those times many remain silent. The American College of Nurse-Midwives is a powerful voice in reproductive health and we call upon our organization to support justice and human rights. As of this writing over 4,000 civilians in Gaza have been killed, and that is including 1,500 children. Nearly 40 percent of the population of Gaza are children who have lived under a blockade since 2007 and are now living through one of the worst humanitarian disasters imaginable.
Hospitals have lost power and health care providers are having to decide whether to evacuate and abandon their patients or stay and perish in the onslaught of Israeli bombs, which have been indiscriminately aimed at homes, mosques, schools, and hospitals.
We say the answer to grief is not more war and destruction. We say no to continued occupation, apartheid and genocide. We ask the American College of Nurse-Midwives to stand on the right side of history with Doctors without Borders in calling for the bombing to stop.
We ask the American College of Nurse Midwives to condemn Israeli attacks on hospitals and that humanitarian aid must be allowed into Gaza, just as the UN has called for.
We stand with ALL the midwives affected, not just a singular American midwife. Our hearts are with the hundreds of Palestinian midwives and OB/GYNs who are tasked with caring for the nearly 50,000 Palestinian women and pregnant people who are in dire need of reproductive health care.
We ask that ACNM adhere to its commitment to reproductive justice for all people. One of the founding tenants of reproductive justice is not only for people to be able to have children, but they must be able to raise those children in safety. We call upon ACNM to stand on the right side of history even when that stance is unpopular.
We petition for the American College of Nurse-Midwives to support a free and safe Palestine.
