Defining Resilience
What is Resilience?

Resilience is defined as the ability of a city to maintain essential functions and to evolve and emerge stronger in the face of acute shocks and chronic stresses. Building resilience is about making communities better prepared and more able to not only "bounce back," but also "bounce forward," when they encounter challenges.

The Nashua resilience strategy will build on past successes and look to new integrated planning to ensure a thriving future for the community.

What is an acute shock?

An acute shock is a sudden event, such as a flood or terrorist attack, that impacts the city and community in the short term.

What is a chronic stress?

A chronic stress is a slow moving issue, such as high unemployment or reoccurring water shortages, that impacts the cohesion and strength of the city and community over a long period of time.
