Waterford Outdoor Class – Fall, Winter and Spring Term 2015-2016

FALL & SPRING Term Outdoor Class will include some, or all of the following activities:

-Travelling to and from activity sites in a Waterford School Activity Bus
-Hiking (both on and off-trail)
-Orienteering - Map and compass navigation
-Rockclimbing (inside and outside)
-Rappelling (outside)
-Tyrolean traverse (technical river crossing)
-Packrafting
-Swimming
-Cooking with a backcountry stove and related equipment
-Wilderness first aid scenarios
-Natural history interpretation
-Field sports such as frisbee, soccer, flag football, socketball, capture the flag

WINTER & SPRING Term Outdoor Class will include some, or all of the following activities:

-Traveling to and from activity sites in a Waterford School Activity Bus
-Traveling in areas with potential avalanche hazards
-Snowshoeing (both on and off-trail)
-Building and occupying snow shelters
-Cross-country Skiing
-Backcountry Skiing and Snowboarding
-Shovel Sliding
-Hiking (both on and off-trail)
-Orienteering - Map and compass navigation
-Using Ice Axes to travel on steep snow and practice self-arrest techniques
-Wilderness first aid scenarios
-Rock climbing, both indoors on a climbing wall and outside
-Field sports such as frisbee, soccer, flag football, socketball, capture the flag


The Waterford Outdoor Class involves activities, not limited to those mentioned here, that are challenging, educational, and fun and that contain an element of risk.

Participating in these activities involves an inherent threat and can result in damage to equipment and personal belongings, serious injury, and in extreme cases, permanent trauma or death. Injuries include, but are not limited to dehydration, hypothermia, sprained joints and muscles, broken bones, frostbite, and other related injuries. This course will be physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding.

Please note that many of the activities take place outside where the weather can change rapidly into wet, snowy or cold conditions. For this reason, it is imperative that students enrolled in this course are dressed appropriately. Please consult and follow the Clothing and Equipment List included in this information packet.
