Stage 3: A Systematic Approach to Comprehension Instruction
DATE: Monday 2 March 9:00am - 3:00pm

PRESENTER: Hilton Ayrey

Rather than overwhelm the reader (and the teacher) with a myriad of comprehension strategies, we provide a developmental pathway to comprehension fluency. In Stage 3, using the '3 Steps' routine, students make a habit of unpacking the literal meaning of sentences as they are reading, rather than being dependant on the teacher to initiate deeper processing of text with those tricky questions. Student gain huge confidence and ownership of the meaning making process with SharpReading.

When are students ready for Stage 3?
Students must have developed some fluency with decoding, normally around a reading age of 7-8 years. We will establish some specific criteria for this in the workshop.

Especially designed for teachers of those older students who 'get stuck' on decoding - they haven't yet developed the decoding fluency they need to become confident readers. We have had great success with normalising these readers the following approach.

SevenPlus (an 8-10 week intervention) is aimed at habitualising some key strategies and rebuilding confidence and self-belief. The price of the workshop includes $100 worth of resources - everything you need to run the intervention and more.
