Black: History, Futures, Stories
We want to make sure that in observing Black History month we are acknowledging more than the past, which is why we are also observing Black Futures month by supporting the businesses and individuals who make our community so vibrant. The South of Downtown focus area is home to one of the most concentrated pockets of diverse people in the city. From chefs and hair dressers, to artists parents and nonprofit workers, we wanted to share some of the stories of the amazing Black, African and African diasporic people who call our neighborhoods home, whether that is in residence or occupation.
South of Downtown Community Development Organization is teaming up with Juju’s Vegan Cajun and Creole Cuisine and the ArtBus LNK to provide 100 free coloring books, crayons and free meals for Black history month. The coloring books include original art by local artists with quotes and info on local Black, African, and African diasporic leaders in the Lincoln community and historically. Participating artists tentatively include Chas Hyman, Kat Morrow, N8 DeVivo, Katharen Wiese, Artie Mack, and Jevon Woods. In these coloring books you will find information on the historic figures many of us have come to know well, as well as some of the unsung heroes who through their love of Black culture, whether that is Cajun food, jazz music, or coily hair, have enriched our lives through their services and stories.
