This annual 30-mile kayak paddle around New York’s Manhattan Island will begin and end at either Bloomers Beach in Fort Lee New Jersey or the Dyckman Street Beach on the Hudson River in Northern Manhattan.
The 16th Annual Manhattan Kayak Circumnavigation will take place on Saturday, July 20, 2019 (Rain date: July 21, 2019). We have renamed this event the "Gerry Blackstone Manhattan Kayak Circumnavigation" in honor of the man who initiated it. Gerry Blackstone was a much-loved member of our NYC kayaking community whom we lost in 2018.
The 2019 Gerry Blackstone Manhattan Kayak Circumnavigation is open to all who qualify based on paddling experience and will paddle decked kayaks 14 feet or longer. While sponsored by Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club membership is not required for participation and we welcome out-of-towners.
Careful planning by event management means that the tidal currents help rather than oppose the paddlers. Safety of the group is enhanced by the leadership of trained and qualified guides supported by safety boat and jet-ski escorts including , marine radio communications and in collaboration with NYPD Harbor Patrol and United Stated Coast Guard.
Kayakers can socialize, exercise, take pictures and explore during this amazing 30 mile excursion around Manhattan Island. Kayakers will join a group which they will stay with for the duration of the trip. Launching from New York or New Jersey, the first groups of leisurely and meditative kayakers will start at 5:30 AM and 6:15 AM. The second moderate pace groups will launch at 6:00 AM and 6:45 AM.
The 2019 Gerry Blackstone Manhattan Circumnavigation is sponsored by Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club and supported by New York City Water Trail Association, Sebago Canoe Club, Inwood Canoe Club, Long Island City Community Boathouse, Village Community Boathouse, Hoboken Cove Boathouse, Long Island Kayak Enthusiasts, Long Island Paddlers, North Atlantic Canoe and Kayak (NACK).Event Insurance is provided by the American Canoe Association.
