Consent for DNA testing & Data Management - global (Eng)

The Reconnecting Cambodia (RC) project is a family tracing service using DNA testing. Anyone of Cambodian descent, who has been separated from family by war, genocide, poverty and adoption, can apply for a free test. We have the Reconnecting Cambodia office in the UK, DNACambodia in the Netherlands and the Khmer Family Charity Organization (KFCO) on the ground leading our Cambodian operations. 

Our small but dedicated team offers the MyHeritage test with a simple cheek swab—no blood needed. You'll receive assistance or clear instructions for sample collection. Once mailed to the lab, expect results notification within 2-3 months.

By ticking the consent box at the bottom of the form, and the provision of your signature, you agree to the terms outlined below:

• As a valued new member of the Reconnecting Cambodia project, we own and manage your test and its results within our project account in MyHeritage’s database.  

•   You collect your DNA sample, which we will activate within our project at MyHeritage. Please see the steps in the activation process that we agree on your behalf here.

• You will be notified of the results when ready and be invited by a MyHeritage link to view your unique DNA profile. We will guide you through the results and DNA relative matches to you. Anyone wanting to contact you has to go through us and vice versa until both parties agree on direct contact.

• We will continue to manage your test and results in the future. Your DNA profile is uniquely yours and belongs to you.  You can opt out of the project by written request at any time by contacting us at info@reconnectingcambodia.org (Eng) or kpthai@kfco-dna.org (Kh).

• You provide us with as much family information as you can to help us build a family tree. To include names of parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts/uncles, the children of all of the above. If known, please include birth year if known, and birth village/province. 

• We need to be able to contact you, so we need a current email, phone number or Facebook page at all times. 

• We will upload your DNA results to other commercial DNA company databases, so more matches can be found.

You also understand that: 

• Your saliva sample will be converted to what is known as a RAW DNA data file.

• Your DNA results will be compared to all other tests in the database and compared for family matches. They will be categorized as close, intermediate, and distant. 

• Your DNA results will be analyzed for Ancestral Origins and Ethnicity. This information varies greatly in accuracy and is just informational. 

Confidentiality and Data Protection: your personal data will be stored, protected, and used in compliance with applicable data protection laws and your personal information will not be shared with unauthorized third parties. For more information, please read our Privacy Policy.
