Speech Tournament Application
Thank you for your interest in the League of Women Voters of Alameda (LWVA) and College of Alameda (COA) Speech Tournament. We are looking to accept approximately. 5 students to participate and compete in the persuasive speech tournament on Friday April 24, 2020 from 5-7pm in the F-Building Pit at COA. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the runner up will get $500. All students will receive college credit from the Communication Department at COA for their participation. There will be four required meetings and practice sessions at College of Alameda leading up to the tournament. Dates/times of the required meetings and practice sessions to be announced and will be based on student availability.
The persuasive speech topic this year is:
“Fighting Fake News: How can we promote news literacy and create more informed communities?”
Students can choose their position on the topic and the issues and considerations they believe are central to encouraging more young people to vote.
Students are required to submit a video of their speech along with this application. Please review the Speech Video Guidelines (page 3) and Required Speech Structure (page 4) of the document below to ensure proper submission of your speech and application:
The application deadline is Friday February 7, 2020 at 5:00pm Pacific Time. The applicants selected to participate in the program and tournament be notified via email on or before Friday February 14, 2019.

Candidates that are selected to participate in the speech tournament will be notified via email so please ensure you are checking your email on a regular basis between 2/1/20 and 2/7/20 when you will be notified of the college's selection. Please provide your contact information below.

Each applicant is required to submit a video of their speech. Please read the speech video guidelines and required speech structure documents above. Submissions that do not conform to the guidelines in these documents may be disqualified.
