Full Letter of Support for the Georgia Ave Bus Priority Project

What is the Georgia Avenue NW Bus Priority Project?

This project aims to make bus commutes faster and more reliable along Georgia Avenue NW from Barry Pl NW to Eastern Ave NW. It also aims to make Georgia Avenue safe.1 

This stretch is the busiest Metrobus route in the region. Half of all trips on Georgia Avenue are taken on the bus!

DDOT still needs to hear from the community before November 15, 2024 so they can make a final design that serves all of us. 

Why do we support the Georgia Avenue NW Bus Priority Project?

  • Faster and more reliable bus service. Today, the Georgia Avenue buses are slow and unreliable. The bus lanes in this project will help improve bus service.

  • Public safety and safe streets. The project contains important safety features. One respondent on the Georgia Avenue Survey said: “It’s such a great neighborhood for kids, but it feels like there’s a huge unsafe highway in the middle of our neighborhood.”1

  • Quality of life. Bus lanes are an investment in our quality of life. Faster buses can help us spend less time stuck in traffic. More reliable service can help us plan our days better. And safer streets mean less stress.

Who are we?

  • We are neighbors, families, and community members who care about each other’s safety. One respondent on the Georgia Avenue Survey said: “Nearly every crossing of Georgia feels like taking my family’s life into my hands.”1

  • We are diverse. 71% of us who ride the Georgia Avenue buses are Black, 14% of us are Latino, and 13% of us are white. Only about 1 in 3 of our households own a car.1

  • We are commuters. We represent the almost 22,000 people who ride the 70 and 79 on an average weekday. We make Georgia Avenue NW the busiest bus corridor in the region. And we make up half of all people traveling along Georgia Avenue.2

  • We are workers. We represent the 110,000 jobs located within ¼ mile of the bus corridor.2

This letter was written by Petworth for Safer Streets, a group of neighbors advocating for traffic safety improvements on our streets and DC Families for Safe Streets, a victim/survivor-led movement that fights to reduce to zero the number of people killed or seriously injured in traffic crashes across the United States.
