Choir Auditions - Spring 2017
Thank you for your interest in auditioning for Concert Choir and/or Women's Chorus for the 2017-2018 school year. At MHS, we have four curricular/class choirs - Men's and Women's Chorale (no formal audition necessary), Women's Chorus (open to SA singers upon audition), and Concert Choir (mixed choir, rigorously auditioned). Incoming freshmen are permitted to audition for Women’s Chorus and Concert Choir. I encourage students to audition for choirs every year possible, as it helps to insure you are placed in the most appropriate class ensemble.

Each choir will continue to maintain the high standard of music excellence applied to the choirs at MHS. Please be sure to read the MHS course selection guide for additional information on the ensembles. You may audition for Women’s Chorus and Concert Choir regardless of the ensemble you schedule through the MHS scheduling system. Students should schedule for the group they are currently in (or incoming freshmen should schedule men's/women's chorale). If you are selected for a different group, I will contact your counselor and make sure your schedule is adjusted. Current 8th Graders will be scheduling later this year, so you will likely audition before you actually submit your schedule requests to counselors. Upperclassmen please note: Once you have served in an ensemble, you do not need a formal re-audition to remain in the same group for the next school year.

Auditions for class choirs will be held after and during school (by appointment) around mid-March. I will send sign-up information to the Email address you provide prior to the start of auditions.

Auditions will consist of three parts:
1. Short vocalization of scales/exercises, range/tone/pitch assessment
2. Presentation of the prepared song excerpt (pdf will be sent with audition materials); text/words, pitch numbers, or solfege may be used
3. Sight-reading an unknown piece of music (any reading system may be used - solfege is preferred)

Each audition should last around 4-7 minutes, and they really aren’t too scary. I weigh musicianship, including music theory knowledge, sight-reading skill, sensitivity and understanding of music, heavily during these auditions. Pitch accuracy, tone quality, range, and audition discipline/focus/maturity may also be considered in the auditions.

Good luck and, regardless of the results of the audition, I look forward to an OUTSTANDING year of working with you in the Medina High School Choral Music Program.
