What weather conditions are unsafe for rowing?
*
High wind; Thunder; Lightning; Extreme cold or heat; Dense fog
Depends on skill of rower
Depends if a safety launch and/or coach is present
Safety rules only apply to novice rowers
What should you do if there is a thunderstorm approaching while you are on the water?
*
Count time between thunder and lightning, if more than 5 seconds continue rowing
Return to dock only of you see lightening

What is the traffic pattern around Forge Pond?
*

Staying close to the shore, row in a counter-clockwise direction
Stay in the middle of the pond
First boat on the water sets the traffic pattern
Where on the water should you stop to rest and why?
*
Middle of the pond, other boat traffic should steer around you
Close to the shore, other boat traffic should steer around you
Middle of the pond, out of the way of other boat traffic
Close to the shore, out of the way of other boat traffic
What should you do if another boat is heading towards you?
*
It is the responsibility of the other boat to avoid you
Communicate loudly and clearly with the oncoming boat, making sure that they have heard you, then pull towards the shore.
Row faster
Move to the middle of the pond
What are the dangers of rowing when the weather or water is cold?
*
If you wear the proper gear there is no danger
If there is a safety launch on the water there is no danger
Rowing becomes uncomfortable in cold weather
Flipping is much more dangerous – hypothermia can strike very quickly if you become submerged in cold water and when you’re wearing more layers it’s harder to swim or tread water
What equipment do you need to check before every row?
*
Bow ball, riggers, all nuts & bolts, foot stretchers, heel ties, oar collar & sleeve and seat
Only check equipment if there is a "do not row" flag attached
Check equipment only after a regatta or if the boat has been recently rigged
Only check equipment that fails a visual inspection
Which piece of equipment is important for your escape from the boat if you flip?
*
Heel ties, with no more than 3” of play
Bow ball firmly attached
Foot stretcher properly adjusted
Rigger quick release safety device
When rowing a 1x, how often should you turn your head to look for oncoming traffic?
*
When nearing the end of the pond
Only when you hear someone shout "heads up"
Every 4 to 8 strokes or more often if approaching other boats, the shore, or the dock
No more than once every 8 strokes as it upsets the rhythm of the boat
If your shell flips, what should you do?
*
Wait for help
Leave the boat and swim to shore
Panic
Get back in if you can, use the shell as a paddle board and kick your way to shore, or have a buddy assist you in stabilizing the hull so you can climb in
If your shell flips, what should you NOT do?
*
Stay with the boat
Leave the boat and swim to shore
Get back in if you can
Use the shell as a paddle board and kick your way to shore
What should you do if the boat you are rowing is damaged during your row?
*
Leave the boat in slings so it can be repaired
You break it, you fix it
Return the boat to the rack, our coaches check boats for damage daily
Mark the boat as damaged so no one else takes the boat out and inform us as soon as possible
What should you do before every row?
*
Ensure you have all necessary safety gear, follow all the rules and check the equipment before leaving the dock
Check the equipment after pushing away from the dock - dock space is limited!
Not necessary if a coach is present
Most safety gear is optional
What should you do after every row?
*
Log your meters
Cleaning the oars is optional
Steps taken after your row depend on your time constraints
