1. Living in Riverside Sunderland
The masterplan proposes to build 1,000 new homes to rent and buy in four new riverside neighbourhoods with community amenities including local shops, cafes, pre-school nurseries, primary care and community gardens.

2. Working in Riverside
The masterplan will create more than a million square feet of office space in a new central business district on either side of St Mary’s Boulevard> There will be other workspace in the city centre and Sheepfolds; enough space to accommodate 8-10,000 jobs.

3. Riverside Park
We will regenerate Galley’s Gill and both banks of the river to create a new “people’s park” for residents, city centre workers and visitors. The paths network will be improved and lighting installed. There are plans for a riverside café, wildflower meadows and space for play and exercise.

4. Key projects: The Culture House
The masterplan includes a proposal to build a flagship cultural destination in Keel Square, including a new library, a family learning centre, a local studies centre and spaces for artists and community groups. The heart of the building will be a public meeting space, with a café opening out onto Keel Square.

5. Key projects: St Mary’s Boulevard
The masterplan will upgrade the street and make it an elegant green boulevard – the main street of the central business district. The proposals aim to reduce traffic speeds and provide a better environment for pedestrians and cyclists; they will create a new public space linked to Keel Square.

6. Key projects: Crossing the river
We propose two new bridges for walkers and cyclists across the River Wear; the first will be a high-level crossing between Vaux and Sheepfolds, and the other will span the river at low-level, joining up Riverside Park. The bridges will connect the site, helping to create a stronger sense of community.

7. Carbon-neutral
The masterplan aims to make Riverside Sunderland the UK’s first carbon neutral urban quarter through measures including energy-efficient homes, built using modern methods of construction; reducing car dependency; the creation of sustainable energy networks; and waste reduction.
