16th Annual Black Reel Award Submission Form

On behalf of the Foundation for the Augmentation of African Americans in Film (FAAAF), thank you for entering your film in consideration for the 16th Annual Black Reel Awards.

Below are the eligible categories. For accuracy purposes, please fill out ALL information provided in each category you wish to be considered for.

Who is eligible for a Black Reel Award?

The Black Reel Award of Merit (The Black Reel Award) is presented to African-Americans and people of the African Diaspora that excel in acting, directing and technical categories.

The following category submissions must consist of talent representing the African Diaspora:
- Directing Categories (TV & Feature Categories)
- Acting Categories (Film, TV, Voice Performance)

The following category submissions must consist of at least ONE African-American or representative of the African Diaspora:
- Best Original Song
- Screenwriting Categories (Film & TV)

SCREENING OF FILM:

- To ensure that your project has the best chance of earning a nomination and/or win, we strongly encourage you to provide screening links. Please send password-protected screening links to blackreelawards@gmail.com and our awards nominating committee will distribute them to our voters.

VOTING PROCESS:

- Voting panel consist of 60 respected and reputable film critics, music and film professionals.

- Voting is split into two rounds. The first round of voting is to determine the nominees and the second round determines the winners.

- Categories with less than 6 submissions will not be presented.
- Categories with 6-9 submissions will have 3 final nominees.
- Categories with 10 or more submissions will have 5 nominees.

MOTION PICTURE CATEGORIES

Category 1 | Outstanding Film (Awarded to producers (only three) of films representing the African-American or the African Diaspora through acting, directing and/or writing. Eligible films must have a theater count of 100+ screens.)

Category 2 | Outstanding Actor, Feature (Awarded to African-American Actors or of African Diaspora)

Category 3 | Outstanding Actress, Feature (Awarded to African-American Actresses or of African Diaspora)

Category 4 | Outstanding Supporting Actor, Feature (Awarded to African-American Actors or of African Diaspora)

Category 5 | Outstanding Supporting Actress, Feature (Awarded to African-American Actresses or of African Diaspora)

Category 6 | Outstanding Directing, Feature (Awarded to Directors of feature films. Directors of Independent films and Documentaries are not eligible.)

Category 7 | Outstanding Screenplay, Adapted or Original (Awarded to Screenwriters of Feature and Foreign films. At least one writer must be of African/Black Descent)

Category 8 | Outstanding Documentary (Awarded to the Director. Eligible documentaries released in two or more markets whose subject matter focuses on the African American or African Diaspora)

Category 9 | Outstanding Ensemble (Awarded to Casting Directors)

Category 10 | Outstanding Foreign Film (Awarded to the Director. Feature or Independent films Made or Initially Released outside the U.S. focusing on African Americans or the African Diaspora)

Category 11 | Outstanding Breakthrough Performance (Awarded to an Actor/Actress of African American or the African Diaspora in their film debut in a mainstream role. More than one performer can be submitted per film)

Category 12 | Outstanding Voice Performance (Awarded to Actors of African American or the African Diaspora)

Category 13 | Outstanding Score (Awarded to Composers of Feature, Independent and Foreign films ONLY)

Category 14 | Outstanding Original Song (Awarded to the Performer and Songwriters featured in Feature, Independent and Foreign films. Candidates must consist of ONE person of African American or the African Diaspora. Limit of three songs per film)


INDEPENDENT CATEGORIES

Category 15 | Outstanding Independent Film (Awarded to the Director. Films without either major distribution, released in less than 100 screens, and/or were featured in at least one film festival are eligible)

Category 16 | Outstanding Independent Documentary (Awarded to the Director. Documentaries without distribution, released in less than three markets and/or featured in at least one film festival are eligible)

Category 17 | Outstanding Independent Short (Awarded to the Director. Eligible films run time must not exceed more than 30 minutes and have been screened at a minimum of ONE film festival)

Category 18 | Outstanding Independent Short Documentary (Awarded to the Director. Eligible films run time must not exceed more than 30 minutes and have been screened at a minimum of ONE film festival )

TELEVISION CATEGORIES

Category 19 | Outstanding Television Documentary or Special (Awarded to the Director. Subject matter must focus on African Americans or the African Diaspora)

Category 20 | Outstanding Television Movie or Limited Series (Awarded to the Producer(s) of television films, mini or limited-series representing the African-American or African Diaspora through acting, writing, or directing. Eligible programs must air on television or streaming service within the calendar year)

Category 21 | Outstanding Actor Television Movie or Limited Series (Awarded to Actors of African American or the African Diaspora)

Category 22 | Outstanding Actress Television Movie or Limited Series (Awarded to Actresses of African American or the African Diaspora)

Category 23 | Outstanding Supporting Actor, Television Movie or Limited Series (Awarded to Actors of African American or the African Diaspora)

Category 24 | Outstanding Supporting Actress, Television Movie or Limited Series (Awarded to Actresses of African American or the African Diaspora)
