On 1 July 2025, Powys Teaching Health Board decided that all Powys patients—whether treated in Wales or England—will follow NHS Wales waiting time rules. Prior to this, those going to English hospitals had shorter waits under NHS England targets. The change was made to save money because the health board is facing a big financial deficit.

Powys doesn’t have a general hospital so we have no choice but to access English hospitals for our elective surgeries. We now have to wait 104 weeks, whilst our English neighbours wait half that time. This feels like discrimination against Powys residents due to a policy that puts us at a clear disadvantage just because of where we live.

We want to show decision-makers the real impact this is having on Powys residents.
