June 2025 AFT Budget Cuts Outreach
AFT 1789 needs to hear from YOU  about the "quiet" (and not-so-quiet) cuts you're seeing across the district. Admin have  been patting themselves on the back for how they've been handling budget cuts in light of the deficits discovered since last summer, and thanking their "union partners" for collaboration.  And although they claim that our three unions have been involved in this "budgeting," the three unions have NOT signed off on their devastating budget cuts; our job is to FIGHT HARD for ourselves, our students and our working conditions, not to tell them what cuts we'd like to see.

We know that the stark reality, no matter how they spin it,  is that folks are losing their jobs, our working conditions are deteriorating, and course sections are being cut, all of which affect our students, our workers, and our communities. We know that over the years, the Instruction budget has been declining while spending on middle and upper admin positions has increased. We know that faculty and staff did not create these deficits, and that the budget should not be balanced on our backs.

We also know that our faculty and staff  know better than admin what's going on in their divisions and departments, and what impacts these cuts are already having. In order for us to plan our next steps -- and our next ACTIONS! --  we need to hear from you  so we can have a clear picture of what's REALLY happening and how it's impacting us!  What cuts have you been seeing, and how have they affected our workers, our students, and our communities? Please share your observations and experiences with us below!

Whether you attended the May 1st walkout or not, we'd like some feedback from you! We want to know the reasons why people choose to participate (or not!) in concerted union actions!

* If you attended the walkout, what led you to participate? And what did you feel worked well or less well?

* If you did not attend, could you share why you did not attend?

* And: do you have any other feedback regarding the walkout, whether you attended or not, in terms of  planning, communication, programming, etc?

If you are you a program coordinator, could a union rep or steward attend your next department meeting for a few minutes to speak with your department? If so, what's  your next department meeting date and time?
